L.A.S.E.R. Tag

L.A.S.E.R. Tag is a culture-jamming intervention, a “Weapon of Mass Defacement,” to use the artists’ words. It can be seen as an extension of the tradition of graffiti or “tagging.” By replacing spray paint with powerful lasers, these renegade  tags can be writ large on the facades of urban spaces. Graffiti Research Lab’s motto is‚ “Dedicated to outfitting graffiti artists with open source technologies for urban communication.”[1] L.A.S.E.R. Tag comprises a DIY toolkit joining a tracking mechanism and laser light to enable digital graffiti artists to tag their locales with artistic and political messages. They posted the instructions for creating your own on Instructibles.

Graffiti Research Lab, founded by Evan Roth and James Powderly during their fellowships at the Eyebeam OpenLab, is an art group dedicated to outfitting graffiti writers, artists and protesters with open source technologies for urban communication. The members of the group experiment in a lab and in the field to develop and test a range of experimental technologies. They document those efforts with video documentation and DIY instructions for each project and make it available for everybody.
