In 1989 the Barbie Liberation Organization was formed. Taking advantage of similarities in the voice hardware of Teen Talk Barbie<\/em> and the Talking Duke G.I.<\/abbr> Joe<\/em> doll, er, \u201caction figure,\u201d they absconded with several hundred of each and performed a stereotype-change operation on the lot.<\/p>\n

The surgery was no simple matter \u2014 circuit boards had to be trimmed, a capacitor moved, and a switch re-engineered. The press made it sound like an easy pop-and-switch operation, but this took some research and dedication.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The BLO<\/abbr> returned the altered dolls to the toy store shelves, who then resold them to children who had to invent scenarios for Barbies who yelled \u201cVengeance is mine!\u201d and G.I.<\/abbr> Joes who daydreamed \u201cLet\u2019s plan our dream wedding!\u201d Cleverly placed \u201ccall your local TV<\/abbr> news\u201d stickers on the back ensured that the media would have genuine recipients to interview as soon as the news broke.<\/p>\n

One BLO<\/abbr> member counted up the many benefits of their program: \u201cThe storekeepers make money twice, we stimulate the economy \u2014 the consumer gets a better product \u2014 and our message gets heard.\u201d[1]\"A<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
