Many refugees fled into<br \/>\nVienna, and soon the underground was filled with listless wanderers who did not<br \/>\nspeak German or have any semblance of a home to return to. With no identity,<br \/>\ngrasp of the language, or place to stay, music become the refugees\u2019 only way to<br \/>\nexpress their shared sorrow. Horn created this piece in hopes of offering<br \/>\nstability to a nameless and lost people. The sculpture is composed of several<br \/>\nladders extending from the ground and up to a very high window, adorned with<br \/>\nnine mechanical violins that play a single, mournful note on their own. It is<br \/>\nas if they sing of some kind of bittersweet hope of what might lie at the top<br \/>\nof the ladder and out into the sun. The melancholy humming of the violins has<br \/>\nbeen known to inspire buskers to improvise along with them. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":82,"featured_media":5629,"template":"","artist":[887],"streams":[2],"keywords":[],"decade":[5543],"media":[5550],"class_list":["post-709","artwork","type-artwork","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","artist-rebecca-horn","streams-motion-duration-illumination","decade-1990s","media-installation"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/artwork\/709","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/artwork"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/artwork"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/82"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/artwork\/709\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":5636,"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/artwork\/709\/revisions\/5636"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/5629"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=709"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"artist","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/artist?post=709"},{"taxonomy":"streams","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/streams?post=709"},{"taxonomy":"keywords","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/keywords?post=709"},{"taxonomy":"decade","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/decade?post=709"},{"taxonomy":"media","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?post=709"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
