In this installation David Rokeby has cut up Duchamp\u2019s <span style=\"font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-font-family: SimSun; mso-fareast-language: ZH-CN; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nude_Descending_a_Staircase,_No._2\">\u2018Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2\u2019<\/a> (1912, below, left) <\/span>into several hundred facets. This faceted image is projected on a wall in life-size. All the facets are interactive, they will only light up when there\u2019s movement in front of their exact locations. When there\u2019s no movement, the projection is all black. This means that the nude from the projection will start coming to life through motion tracking. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">A monitoring camera is pointed at the viewer from the screen. When the viewer moves his\/her hand, only a part of the projected image is revealed. When the viewer moves his\/her whole body, the entire work can be revealed. So <\/span><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\">through a participant\u2019s motion, the artwork of Duchamp temporarily comes to life; the facets illuminate and fade away revealing the dynamic experience of a movement. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"Cheap Imitation \" title=\"Cheap Imitatio\" width=\"520\" height=\"318\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000;\">Duchamp\u2019s \u2018Nude Descending a Staircase\u2019 was inspired by Eadweard J. Muybridge<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\">&#8216;s \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Eadweard_Muybridge_1.gif \">Woman Walking Downstairs\u2019<\/a> (below, center) &#8211; a stop-motion film from his 1887 picture series, published as \u2018<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">The Human Figure in Motion\u2019<\/span>. Duchamp\u2019s painting combines elements of both the Cubist and Futurist movements. He tries to depict motion by superimposing his images, much like stroboscopic motion photography. <br \/>Rokeby\u2019s imitation of Duchamp\u2019s artwork, takes Duchamp\u2019s image a step further by making the nude really able to \u201cmove\u201d. Rokeby states that \u2018Cheap Imitation\u2019 also incorporates the \u201cfeel\u201d of Duchamp\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Bride_Stripped_Bare_By_Her_Bachelors,_Even\">The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even <\/a><\/span><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">(1915-23, above right).\u00a0 This is a painting on a transparent glass, which sort of functions as a mirror. It reflects whoever stands in front of it; we are never able to look at it without seeing ourselves. In this way it channels a form of interactivity between the viewer and the artwork. Rokeby\u2019s work functions as an interactive mirror as well. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New &#13;&#10;Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <br \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\">One might consider Rokeby\u2019s installation as \u2018archeological media art\u2019, as defined by Erkki Huhtamo in his article \u2018Resurrecting the Technological Past: An Introduction to the Archeology of Media Art\u2019. Huhtamo defines these artworks as time-machines that are: \u201cnot automatic or remote-controlled means of mass transportation (like the cinema), but individual \u2018hand-driven\u2019 vehicles. The realm they transverse only opens up for the active participant\u201d.
