{"id":2461,"date":"2019-03-05T20:21:17","date_gmt":"2019-03-06T04:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/artwork\/nests-2\/"},"modified":"2021-01-02T18:02:09","modified_gmt":"2021-01-03T02:02:09","slug":"nests-2","status":"publish","type":"artwork","link":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/artwork\/nests-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Nests"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-2461-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/youtube\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gCB9BE5H6B4&#038;_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gCB9BE5H6B4\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gCB9BE5H6B4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>Artist Jakub Geltner has developed a series of installations that flip the viewpoint of standard surveillance equipment.\u00a0 The project known as \u201cnest\u201d utilizes surveillance equipment such as video cameras and satellite dishes, and positions them in unique places in congested flocks.\u00a0 The unique places include but are not limited to beaches, elementary schools, buildings, and bridges where the amalgamations of up to twenty or so cameras or satellites are placed within extremely close proximity to each other; pointing every which direction.\u00a0 Surveillance by governments, corporations, and even other institutions is becoming an epidemic around the world.\u00a0 This is Geltner\u2019s way of reminding the world that, in a sense, humans are never out of the line of sight; we continually are being watched even when we do not notice.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"width: 250px; height: 200px;\" src=\"http:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/jakub-geltner-nests-security-cameras-in-nature-sculpture-by-the-sea-designboom-500.jpg\" alt=\"jakub-geltner-nests-security-cameras-in-\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The high saturation of cameras and satellites mimic the spreading of an infection or rash, while also bringing these technological objects that are usually meant to have no heed brought to them into being palpable by the public.[1]\u00a0 Geltner brings up the point that these surveillance technologies that are being incorporated in almost every place of human interactivity are more of a hindrance than a helping in the world; possibly something that invades not only on the privacy of individuals, but invades on basic human rights and wellbeing.\u00a0 Even if you are in a private space such as your home, there are multiple devices and technologies that very much might be listening in on you conversations, tracking your internet searches, and distributing your metadata amongst various companies to hone in products that fit to your needs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"height: 200px; width: 300px;\" src=\"http:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/jakub-geltner-sculpture-by-the-sea-cctv-nest-designboom-06.jpg\" alt=\"jakub-geltner-sculpture-by-the-sea-cctv-\" \/>These installations are constantly put in places that are meant for leisure and relaxation, creating a question of how often are we being surveilled in our private lives without cognizance?\u00a0 Is this something that is moral?\u00a0 This postmodernist view of the conditions of surveillance allude to the negative effects that surveillance can have on society.\u00a0 Why should humans be subjected to random surveillance by groups that are higher in class or government authority?\u00a0 Geltner perfectly takes on these questions and presents them to the public to spark the conversations and values which governments and other institutions are doing to their citizens.\u00a0\u00a0 Surveillance creates a toxic relationship between social and economic classes, as well as subtly forcing the one\u2019s being \u201csurveilled\u201d to act accordingly to their \u201csurveillors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1-&#8220;Jakub Geltner Nests Security Cameras Satellite Dishes in Nature and Architecture.&#8221; Designboom.
