He described the act of painting&#13;<br \/>\nas &#8220;the art of putting colors side by side in such a way that their&#13;<br \/>\nreal aspect is effaced, so that familiar objects\u2014the sky, people,&#13;<br \/>\ntrees, mountains, furniture, the stars, solid structures,&#13;<br \/>\ngraffiti\u2014become united in a single poetically disciplined image. The&#13;<br \/>\npoetry of this image dispenses with any symbolic significance, old or&#13;<br \/>\nnew.\u201d[1]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ren\u00e9 Magritte described his paintings as &#8220;visible images which conceal&#13;<br \/>\nnothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my&#13;<br \/>\npictures, one asks oneself this simple question, &#8216;What does that&#13;<br \/>\nmean?&#8217;. It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing&#13;<br \/>\neither, it is unknowable&#8221; [2]<\/p>\n<p>Magritte&#8217;s constant play with reality and illusion has been attributed&#13;<br \/>\nto the early death of his mother. Psychoanalysts who have examined&#13;<br \/>\nbereaved children have said that Magritte&#8217;s back and forth play with&#13;<br \/>\nreality and illusion reflects his &#8220;constant shifting back and forth&#13;<br \/>\nfrom what he wishes\u2014&#8217;mother is alive&#8217;\u2014to what he knows\u2014&#8217;mother is dead&#8217;&#13;<br \/>\n&#8220;[3] <\/p>\n<p>[1]: Frasnay, Daniel.
