{"id":1012,"date":"2013-03-26T13:40:25","date_gmt":"2013-03-26T20:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/artwork\/organe-et-fonction-dalice-au-pays-des-merveilles\/"},"modified":"2021-01-01T22:56:53","modified_gmt":"2021-01-02T06:56:53","slug":"organe-et-fonction-dalice-au-pays-des-merveilles","status":"publish","type":"artwork","link":"https:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/en\/artwork\/organe-et-fonction-dalice-au-pays-des-merveilles\/","title":{"rendered":"Organe et Fonction d\u2019Alice au Pays des Merveilles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ascott_4.jpg\" src=\"\" style=\"width: 350px; height: 261px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; float: right;\" \/>Ascott created <em>Organe et Fonction d&rsquo;Alice au Pays des Merveilles (Organ and Function of Alice in Wonderland)<\/em> for <em>Les Immateriaux<\/em>, the exhibition curated by Jean-Francois Lyotard at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1985.&nbsp; Organe et Fonction was accessible to anyone connected to Minitel (the French national videotex system begun in 1981).&nbsp; Ascott&rsquo;s use of this system enabled a potential audience of thousands to experience the sort of intertextual pleating the artist had initiated in <a href=\"http:\/\/artelectronicmedia.com\/artwork\/la-plissure-du-texte\/\"><em>La Plissure du Texte<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp; <em>Organe et Fonction<\/em> can be interpreted as an archetypal, postmodern artwork.&nbsp; Randomly selected quotations from a French translation of Lewis Carroll&rsquo;s Alice in Wonderland were juxtaposed with quotations from a scientific treatise entitled <em>Organe et Function<\/em>, creating unexpected relationships and associations.&nbsp; Conventional notions of originality, authenticity, objecthood, narrative, and style were supplanted by appropriation, duplication, distribution, juxtaposition, and randomness<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Edward A.
